6 Tips For Your Best LASIK Recovery

LASIK is an extremely safe and low-risk procedure to undergo. In recent years, advances in technology have made it easier for surgeons and patients.

But even when the procedure is quick and painless, many patients worry about how to recover from it. How long will it take? How painful will it be? How likely is an infection or other complications?

The good news is this: LASIK recovery can be as easy as the surgery. But it’s vital that you follow your doctor’s instructions to avoid complications. Here are the main rules any LASIK surgeon will tell you to have the best recovery possible:

1. Take Your Medication as Prescribed

Before and after LASIK, your doctor will give you medications to take. These will mainly be eye drops that act as antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.

It’s very important to take these drops as often as prescribed and not miss any dosages. Even if your eyes are feeling fine and you think you no longer need antibiotics, keep taking them. This is the best way to prevent infection.

2. Wear Your Eye Shield at Night

Your surgeon will send you home with an eye shield to cover your eyes. You don’t need to wear the shield during the day. At night, it will prevent you from rubbing your eyes against your pillow.

When you’re in the shower, do your best to keep your face away from the showerhead. You also shouldn’t go into a pool or hot tub, even if you keep your face above water.

Chlorine will be even more harmful to your eyes than normal water. Do yourself a favor and avoid pools or hot tubs for at least two weeks after having LASIK.

4. Delay Exercise

Exercise and other strenuous activity make it more likely that you’ll get debris in your eye or damage them. To be safe, you should avoid exercise for at least a week or two after LASIK.

If you take part in a contact sport, you should wait at least a month after having LASIK before playing again. Your doctor may want you to wait longer to exercise or say you can exercise sooner.

Be sure to ask them for their recommendations at your follow-up appointments. They will know when your eyes can handle contact sports again.

5. Don’t Wear Eye Makeup for a While

After having LASIK, you shouldn’t wear eye makeup for at least a week. You can wear other makeup as long as you don’t get it near your eyes.

The risk with eye makeup is getting it in your eyes or even too close to your eyes. After LASIK, your eyes will be more susceptible to infection.

Eye makeup is a surefire way to spread bacteria into your eyes and cause an infection. Although it seems like overkill, your best bet is to throw out any old makeup from before you had LASIK.

6. Don’t Rub Your Eyes

Above all, you should never, ever rub your eyes, even if they itch or feel gritty. They may feel especially itchy for the first day or two after LASIK, but you must control the urge to rub them.

You should never rub your eyes, but after LASIK it’s even more important not to. Not only can you get particles in your eye and cause an infection, but you could dislocate your corneal flap.

The first step: find a good LASIK surgeon and practice. It may seem a little overwhelming at first, especially if you start by searching online.

There are so many ophthalmology practices and centers around these days. How do you sort through them, and how do you decide where to go? First, take a deep breath– then follow these simple steps.

Ask For Recommendations

Start by looking for recommendations from people who have had LASIK. You can look this up online, or you can speak to any friends or family who has had the surgery.

If you don’t know anyone who’s had LASIK you can also start by asking your regular eye doctor. Optometrists usually know which local practices are reputable.

PRK VS. iLASIK Vision Correction

If you’ve ever heard of LASIK, you know it’s a medical procedure that uses a laser to correct your vision. But LASIK is not the only kind of laser vision correction procedure there is. There’s also photorefractive keratectomy or PRK.

PRK was the first laser surgery designed to improve vision by correcting the shape of the eye. There’s also iLASIK, which is an even more advanced LASIK procedure.

Both PRK and iLASIK are offered at Berg-Feinfield Vision Correction. But what’s the difference between them?

Laser Vision Correction

With both LASIK and PRK, an excimer laser reshapes the cornea. Refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism occur through light refraction.

When light refracts through the eye, it’s meant to hit one spot on the retina. Refractive errors occur if the shape of your cornea is incorrect.

By using a laser, a surgeon can remove areas of the cornea and reshape the cornea. By reshaping the cornea, any refractive errors are permanently corrected.

PRK

With PRK, the protective layer of the cornea called the epithelium gets removed. After the epithelium removal, the surgeon uses the laser to reshape the cornea.

Afterward, the eye heals and regenerates the epithelium. While the epithelium heals, your eye is vulnerable and needs great care.

iLASIK

Instead of removing the epithelium, LASIK reshapes the cornea by making a flap. This flap is made with a femtosecond laser. After flap creation, the flap is then lifted up.

This allows the area under the flap to be reshaped with the excimer laser. After the procedure, the flap is replaced and left to fuse back to the rest of the cornea. Because the flap acts as a natural bandage, the recovery time for LASIK is faster than PRK recovery.

The surgery is also simple and painless but there is some time needed for recovery. The better you treat your eyes during recovery, the faster they’ll be able to heal.

Wear Eye Shields At Night

Your doctor will send you home with eye shields. They’re for keeping your eyes protected from dust and debris. They also keep your eyes protected at night from rubbing against your pillow.

You should wear your eye shields for at least five nights after surgery. If you allow pets or children in your bed, use them for at least ten nights.

Wearing eye shields is the easiest way to make sure your eyes aren’t exposed to debris or particles in the air.

Avoid Getting Anything In Your Eyes

After LASIK, your eyes will be more sensitive than normal. Getting dust or debris in them can be dangerous. Did you know that the same goes for soap and water?

Getting water in your eyes could cause an infection, since water can carry bacteria.

Be extra careful while showering, at least in the first week after LASIK. You should avoid any kind of water, including lakes or the ocean.

Swimming should be avoided until your doctor gives you the okay.

Don’t Wear Makeup

Eye makeup and eyes recovering from LASIK don’t mix. Don’t wear any makeup for at least a week. You can wear makeup that isn’t near your eyes, like concealer or lipstick.

Once you are able to wear makeup again, you should buy new eye makeup.

Don’t Go Swimming

Skip the pool and hot tub for at least two weeks after surgery. Chlorinated water is especially dangerous to get near your eyes while you’re healing.

Do yourself a favor and don’t get in the water, even if you keep your head above the surface. Like all other water sources, even chlorinated pool water can carry bacteria!

Go Easy On Exercise

You can exercise about a week after surgery. If you play contact sports like football or rugby, refrain from playing them. Your eye doctor will tell you when you can play them again, but it’s usually about a month.

After this point, your eyes should be healed enough to handle normal contact sports. For other sports, be sure to wear protective eye wear.

Getting hit in the face or head could damage the delicate flaps created during LASIK.

Don’t Rub Your Eyes

Never rub your eyes for any reason. This is a good rule of thumb even if you aren’t recovering from LASIK, but it’s especially important after surgery.

You can get bacteria in your eye or dislocate your corneal flap which can cause issues. Resist the urge to rub when your eyes itch! Instead, use lubricating drops, which your doctor will give you after surgery.

Call Your Doctor If You Have Persistent Pain

Recovering from LASIK can be a little uncomfortable at first, but it shouldn’t be painful. If you find your eyes still hurt after the first few days, you should call your doctor right away.
