What Is the Light Adjustable Lens?

The RxSight Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is the first and only intraocular lens that can be customized after it's implanted. Every other IOL locks in your prescription the moment it's placed — the LAL lets you and your surgeon refine your vision over the weeks that follow, based on how you actually see in the real world.

The lens is made from a proprietary photosensitive material that changes shape when exposed to a precise pattern of ultraviolet light. After your eye has healed, a series of painless light treatments dials in your prescription, correcting nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism with remarkable accuracy. The newer LAL+ adds an extended depth of focus design for more functional intermediate and near vision, while keeping the same adjustability.

How the Adjustment Works

A test-drive for your vision — refined before anything becomes permanent.

1

Cataract Surgery & Implantation

Your cataract is removed and the Light Adjustable Lens is implanted, just like a standard premium IOL. You then heal for about two to three weeks while wearing protective UV-blocking glasses.

2

Light Treatments

You return for a series of quick, painless treatments with the RxSight Light Delivery Device. Each session reshapes the lens to sharpen your prescription — and you can preview different outcomes, such as more reading range or crisper distance.

3

Lock In Your Vision

Once you and your surgeon are happy with your vision, two final lock-in treatments make the result permanent. After lock-in, the protective glasses are no longer needed and you enjoy the vision you chose.

Is the Light Adjustable Lens Right for You?

Who tends to benefit most — and when another lens may suit you better.

The LAL may be ideal if you:

  • Want the most precise, personalized refractive result
  • Have had prior LASIK, PRK, or RK, which makes lens power harder to predict
  • Have astigmatism or a complex prescription
  • Want to preview and choose your vision before it's final

Consider another lens if you:

  • Prefer not to attend several follow-up light treatments → Vivity or PureSee
  • Want maximum reading independence in one fixed lens → PanOptix Pro or TECNIS Odyssey
  • Cannot reliably wear the UV-protective glasses until lock-in

Light Adjustable Lens: Your Questions, Answered

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) from RxSight is the only intraocular lens that can be customized after cataract surgery. It is made of a special photosensitive material, and after your eye heals, your surgeon uses ultraviolet light treatments to fine-tune the lens power to your vision before locking in the final result.
After the LAL is implanted and your eye heals for about two to three weeks, you return for a series of quick, painless UV light treatments with the RxSight Light Delivery Device. Each treatment reshapes the lens to refine your prescription. Once you and your surgeon are happy with your vision, two final lock-in treatments make the result permanent.
LAL+ is the newer version of the Light Adjustable Lens. It adds an extended depth of focus design that improves intermediate and near range, so it offers more functional reading and computer vision than the original LAL while keeping the same post-operative adjustability.
Yes. Between surgery and your final lock-in treatments, you must wear the protective UV-blocking glasses provided to prevent uncontrolled changes to the lens from sunlight and indoor UV. Once the lens is locked in, the special glasses are no longer needed.
The LAL is ideal for patients who want the most precise refractive outcome, those with complex prescriptions or astigmatism, and anyone who has had previous LASIK, PRK, or RK, where predicting lens power is more difficult. It also suits patients who want to preview and choose their final vision rather than commit to a fixed lens.
