Does Medicare cover cataract surgery?

Yes. Original Medicare covers medically necessary cataract surgery with a conventional intraocular lens. In 2026, the annual Part B deductible is $283; after it is met, you generally pay 20% of Medicare-approved amounts. Optional refractive upgrades can add separate charges, and Medicare Advantage rules vary by plan.

What does standard Medicare cataract coverage include?

Part B helps pay for removal of a medically significant cataract and implantation of a conventional intraocular lens, or IOL. The decision depends on your clinical circumstances and how cataracts affect activities such as reading or driving. An evaluation establishes the medical need and identifies other conditions that may limit vision.

Covered surgery can involve separate surgeon, facility and anesthesia charges. Coverage does not mean every charge is paid in full. Medicare also covers one pair of standard-frame eyeglasses or one set of contact lenses after each cataract surgery that implants an IOL, subject to its rules and cost sharing. Review Medicare’s cataract coverage.

How do the 2026 deductible and coinsurance work?

The 2026 Part B deductible is $283 for the calendar year. It is not a new $283 deductible for each eye. Other covered Part B care may already have satisfied some or all of it. After the deductible, you generally owe 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for covered services when the provider accepts assignment.

That percentage is based on Medicare-approved amounts, not simply a practice’s advertised package price. Separate bills and noncovered services can change your total. Ask how much deductible remains and request a written estimate for each eye. These figures update each January; recheck the year of surgery, especially if procedures fall in different calendar years. CMS publishes the 2026 Part B figures.

Does the surgery setting affect your share of the cost?

Yes. Ambulatory surgery centers and hospital outpatient departments use different Medicare payment arrangements, so facility cost sharing can differ. A hospital outpatient copayment is not necessarily the same dollar amount as an ambulatory surgery center’s coinsurance. The surgeon’s services and other charges also contribute to the total.

Berg-Feinfield cataract surgery is performed at Pacific Surgery Center, an AAAHC-accredited ambulatory surgery center at 2829 W. Burbank Blvd., Burbank, CA 91505. Its phone number is (818) 567-0348. This surgical facility is separate from the Burbank consultation office on Alameda Avenue.

Use Medicare’s Procedure Price Lookup to compare national outpatient estimates. It is a planning tool, not your personal quote. Confirm the facility, surgeon and anesthesia arrangements before scheduling.

Does Berg-Feinfield accept Medicare and my specific plan?

Berg-Feinfield works with Medicare and many major medical insurance plans. Its insurance page explains how to request a benefits check. Your exact coverage depends on the plan and the providers involved; Medicare acceptance and accepting assignment are separate questions.

Ask the billing team whether your surgeon, Pacific Surgery Center and anesthesia provider participate in your coverage and accept assignment. For Medicare Advantage, confirm the exact plan product, each provider’s network status, and any referral or prior-authorization requirements.

Bring your Medicare card and any supplemental or Advantage card. Ask for verification of the exact plan and providers rather than relying on a carrier name alone.

How do Medigap and Medicare Advantage affect costs?

Medigap supplements Original Medicare and may help pay covered deductibles, copayments or coinsurance according to the policy. It generally does not turn a noncovered premium-lens upgrade into a covered service. Plans sold to people newly eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020 cannot cover the Part B deductible.

Medicare Advantage is a different way to receive Medicare benefits. Plan-specific copayments, networks and authorization rules apply; the Original Medicare 20% description is not a quote for every Advantage plan. Medigap does not pay Medicare Advantage cost sharing. Compare your plan documents with the proposed providers and services. Medicare & You explains these coverage choices.

Which lens and laser services can add optional charges?

A conventional lens can replace the cloudy natural lens while leaving a need for glasses. Choosing it is a valid treatment plan. An optional upgrade aims to address additional refractive goals and should be priced separately from covered cataract care.

  • Toric lens: Medicare can pay the conventional lens and covered surgical portion while the additional astigmatism-correcting function and related noncovered services are patient-paid.
  • Light Adjustable Lens: the premium adjustable function and related noncovered refractive services can add charges. Review the Light Adjustable Lens visit requirements as well as the price.
  • Laser services: using a laser does not automatically make the entire cataract procedure noncovered. Optional refractive services, such as astigmatism correction, require a separate explanation of what is covered and what is not.

Berg-Feinfield uses the Alcon UNITY Cataract System and the LenSx femtosecond laser with 3D imaging. Technology availability is not a coverage guarantee. Compare the premium lens options and laser cataract surgery approach with the standard option. CMS explains astigmatism-correcting IOL coverage.

What should your written estimate explain?

  • The recommended procedure for each eye and a standard-lens option.
  • Surgeon, facility and anesthesia estimates, with remaining deductible and cost sharing.
  • Each optional lens or refractive service and its separate patient-paid amount.
  • Who provides postoperative care and how any co-managed visits are billed.

Most Berg-Feinfield surgical patients see their own optometrist before and after surgery through co-management. Patients who are not co-managed use the in-house MD/OD team. Coordinate the clinical schedule and insurance details before committing to a plan.

What else do Los Angeles patients ask?

Does Medicare pay 100% of cataract surgery costs?

No. Under Original Medicare, you generally pay the remaining annual Part B deductible and 20% of Medicare-approved amounts for covered care. In 2026, that annual deductible is $283. Supplemental coverage may help with eligible cost sharing, while optional refractive upgrades can create additional charges that Medicare does not pay.

Will Medicare pay for a toric lens?

Medicare can cover the conventional lens and medically necessary surgical portion, while the additional astigmatism-correcting function and related noncovered services are patient-paid. A toric choice does not make all cataract care noncovered. Ask Berg-Feinfield for an itemized estimate separating covered services, insurance cost sharing and the optional upgrade.

Is laser cataract surgery always outside Medicare coverage?

No. Laser use does not automatically make the entire cataract operation noncovered. Coverage depends on the services performed and their purpose. Optional refractive services may carry separate charges. Ask the billing team to identify the covered cataract components and explain each proposed noncovered laser or astigmatism-correction service in writing.

Does Berg-Feinfield accept Medicare?

Yes. Berg-Feinfield works with Medicare and many major medical insurance plans. Ask the billing team to verify your exact benefits, participating providers and assignment arrangements before surgery. Medicare Advantage networks and authorization requirements vary by plan, so confirm coverage for your surgeon, Pacific Surgery Center and anesthesia provider.

Where does Berg-Feinfield perform cataract surgery?

Cataract surgery is performed at Pacific Surgery Center, an AAAHC-accredited ambulatory surgery center at 2829 W. Burbank Blvd., Burbank, CA 91505. Its phone number is (818) 567-0348. Confirm your surgery instructions and transport arrangements; this facility is separate from the Burbank consultation office on West Alameda Avenue.

Will my Medigap policy pay for a premium lens upgrade?

Generally, no. Medigap helps with specified cost sharing for services covered by Original Medicare; it generally does not cover an optional refractive upgrade that Medicare excludes. Your policy determines its benefits. Ask your insurer about the exact services and compare its answer with the practice’s written estimate before choosing.

Can I have follow-up with my own optometrist in Los Angeles?

Yes. Most Berg-Feinfield surgical patients receive care before and after surgery from their own optometrist through co-management. Confirm the clinical schedule and how covered follow-up services are billed with both teams. Patients who are not co-managed receive postoperative care from the practice’s in-house MD/OD team.
