What Actually Determines Whether LASIK Is Right for You?
Four factors do most of the deciding. None of them is about age alone — but age changes how the factors stack up.
Prescription & Stability
Your refractive error must sit within LASIK’s treatable range and hold steady for 1–2 years. Very high myopia points instead to the EVO ICL, which treats up to −20.00 D.
Corneal Thickness & Shape
LASIK reshapes the cornea, so there must be enough healthy tissue. Thin corneas often do beautifully with PRK; irregular shapes like keratoconus rule out laser reshaping entirely.
Eye Health
Significant dry eye, corneal disease, or early lens changes shift the recommendation. Often the dry eye gets treated first — then candidacy is re-checked.

In Your 20s or 30s? This Is LASIK’s Prime Window
Once your prescription has been stable for a year or two, the years between your early 20s and mid-40s are the ideal stretch for LASIK in Los Angeles: your natural lens still focuses at all distances, so correcting the cornea corrects everything. In Your 40s or 50s? The Question Changes
Somewhere in the mid-40s, nearly everyone starts holding menus farther away. That’s presbyopia — and it happens in the eye’s natural lens, not the cornea. LASIK can still deliver crisp distance vision at this age, and monovision LASIK (one eye tuned for near) works well for many patients. But if reading glasses are the real frustration, reshaping the cornea treats the wrong part of the eye.

Past 60, the most common reason vision blurs isn’t refractive error at all — it’s the early clouding of the natural lens. If a cataract is forming, LASIK is the wrong operation: it would sharpen a lens that’s about to cloud over anyway. The right move is laser-assisted cataract surgery, which removes the clouding lens and replaces it with an advanced IOL chosen for your lifestyle.
