Before your procedure, the UNITY system captures a high-resolution 3D map of your eye — corneal curvature, lens density, and the precise dimensions needed to seat your intraocular lens at the exact angle and position that will serve you best for the rest of your life. Every incision is planned in software before a single instrument touches your eye.
The LenSx replaces the manual blade for the most consequential steps: creating corneal incisions, performing the capsulotomy (the opening through which your new lens is inserted), and fragmenting the cataract itself. Femtosecond pulses — bursts of light lasting one trillionth of a second — create tissue separations without heat or pressure, resulting in cleaner incisions, a more consistently circular and centered capsulotomy, and a pre-fragmented lens that demands far less ultrasound energy to remove.
Less ultrasound energy means less stress on the delicate structures surrounding your lens. That translates directly to faster recovery, lower risk of inflammation, and better long-term outcomes.
With the cataract removed and the capsule precisely prepared, your surgeon implants your chosen intraocular lens with exceptional accuracy. For premium IOLs — particularly trifocals and the Light Adjustable Lens, which require precise centration to perform at their best — the quality of the capsulotomy directly determines the quality of your visual outcome. Laser-assisted cataract surgery takes approximately 10 to 20 minutes per eye. Your eye is fully numbed with anesthetic drops — most patients feel only light pressure, not pain — and a mild oral sedative is available. Both eyes are never operated on the same day; your second eye is typically scheduled about two weeks after the first.
Most patients can drive and return to light activity within 24 to 48 hours. Vision improves gradually over the weeks following your procedure as the eye heals and adapts to your new lens. Your surgeon provides a detailed post-operative care plan tailored to your procedure and chosen IOL.
Standard cataract surgery is covered by Medicare and most major insurance plans. The laser-assisted upgrade involves an additional out-of-pocket cost that your care coordinator reviews clearly and completely at your consultation. There are no surprises at Berg-Feinfield.
